What Problem Does This Solve?

Map helps focus on display and analysis of spatial data in an interactive environment showing their geographic relationship and attributes.

When to Use This Pattern

Use when the value to the user is the map itself like viewing assets in relation to their current location.

What’s the Solution?

Provide an interactive map that uses all or most of the screen canvas available. Navigational and interaction tools can be arranged on top of the map.

Why Use This Pattern?

Many tasks require input or analysis that is directly related to geographical location. In these cases users need to see as much geographical context as possible which requires the map to be the focus of the application. This is especially true when users will spend long periods of time interacting with the map and the number of external distraction needs to be minimized.

Special Considerations

  • Cartography and data display is paramount to the successful use of a full map application.
  • Scale-dependent symbology and labeling helps providing the right information at the right scale.
  • Advanced mapping capabilities and user interactions are common and therefore a higher GIS proficiency is generally required to use a map-centric app.
  • A major disadvantage of a full map approach is that any user input is directly overlaying the map and therefore potentially obstracting important information.
